The journeys of Nikolay Kuzmin

When travelling borders between completed works and fresh sketches disappear.

Travelling memories of his childhood.

In his childhood home near the town of Nizhny Novgorod on the banks of the river Volga his mother gives a guiding hand to his first drawing – the drawing of an apple, a symbol of beauty.

When standing between three pine trees on the outskirts of his village he watches his father disappear on his way to war, remembering this farewell for ever.

He studies at the Stroganov Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow and gives his first exhibitions in Nizhny Novgorod, later in London, Copenhagen, Croatia, France, and finally a retrospective exhibition of his works at the 850th celebration anniversary of Moscow’s foundation.

On his travels and the numerous encounters with new places and people his only travelling companions are his painting utensils. Journeys across France, through western and eastern Europe (Croatia, Russia). The old pendulum of the clock on the wall in the home of his birth, the booms of the clock of Big Ben, the sumptuous gardens and waters of Versailles, a constant movement in time and space, encaptured on canvas inspired moments of colourful inspiration.

Nikolay Kuzmin was born in 1938 and is one of the great representatives of the Muscovite School of artists.
